Human Cost vs. AI Cost

The human wins

A startup CEO posted his $113,000 AI bill last month. Called it the invoice he was "never more proud of."

His team has four people.

That's not a typo. Four employees. $113,000 in AI tokens. One month. And he framed it as proof that his company doesn't need to hire humans.

The average U.S. knowledge worker earns $65,000 a year. This team's AI bill runs 21 times that — every twelve months. The math that was supposed to make AI cheaper than people is producing receipts that would have gotten a CFO fired three years ago.

And yet the talking point hasn't changed. AI is efficient. AI saves money. AI lets you do more with less.

Less just means fewer people on payroll — not fewer costs.

Uber's CTO burned through his company's entire 2026 AI budget in four months. Nvidia's VP of deep learning told Axios: "For my team, the cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees." These aren't critics of AI. These are the people running it at the highest level — and they're admitting the economics are broken.

The original promise was simple: replace expensive humans with cheap software. What nobody stress-tested was what happens when the software runs continuously, calls itself an agent, and bills by the token at scale.

The cost calculation that drove the AI labor wave compared the salary of a person to the subscription price of a tool — and concluded the tool was cheaper. It did not account for what the tool would cost when usage scaled. It did not account for providers stopping subsidized pricing.

142,000 tech workers lost their jobs in the first five months of 2026. The companies that let them go are now getting invoices they didn't budget for, from vendors they can't easily leave.

The humans were cheaper. Nobody ran the numbers.
