Massive group of researchers from 20 universities and AI labs
A group of researchers from 20 universities and AI labs (incl. Stanford University, Yale University, CIFAR, Google DeepMind, Microsoft Research, MetaGPT and many more) released a 264-page technical survey (or should I say book?) on the next evolution of LLMs.
It's what they call "Foundation Agents."
Skimming through the pages, a few interesting perspectives stand out:
Agents have brain-inspired modular architectures Researchers dissect AI agents into cognitive components (memory, reasoning, emotion, and reward) closely mirroring human brain regions. A blueprint for scalable, adaptive systems.
Continual self-optimization for true autonomy Beyond simple prompt-tuning, these foundation agents employ LLM-driven optimization loops to refine their own workflows, planning strategies, and tool usage.
Multi-agent collaboration --> Collective intelligence They explore how agents can share information, coordinate tasks, and even exhibit emergent behaviors when working in groups. They emphasize protocol design to ensure successful team-based problem solving.
How do agents perceive the world The survey explains various paradigms (implicit vs. explicit vs. simulator-based) for how agents "understand" their environment. Equally important is designing long-term and short-term memory systems to support context continuity and avoid catastrophic forgetting.
Alignment & 'Superalignment' They highlight vulnerabilities (like prompt injections, model poisoning, hallucinations) and propose multi-objective alignment — so agents scale in performance and safety. The concept of "superalignment" ties together alignment goals with technical upgrades at each subsystem. They introduce the AI-45° rule: a conceptual guideline for balancing performance improvements with alignment improvements.
All in all, this whooping research might just be the most comprehensive read on the current state (and future) of AI agents to date.
PS: Imagine if we find out it was all written by an agent. :P
