🇨🇳 China has accumulated 70% of global Al patents, according the 2025 Al Index Report :

🇺🇸 America's share has fallen from roughly 40% in 2010, to 14% in 2023

The global AI patent landscape is undergoing a profound transformation. China has surged ahead, now accounting for nearly 70% of all AI patents as of 2023—a sharp rise from just 13.4% in 2010. This dominance reflects strategic national investment, although many patents remain enforceable only within China. Meanwhile, the United States has seen a major decline from 40% to 14.2%, signaling potential shifts in innovation strategy or global competitiveness. Europe and the rest of Asia remain relatively stable but risk falling behind without aggressive innovation policies. Emerging regions—currently at 2.8%—show potential for disruption through local, impact-driven AI applications.

Looking forward, the AI patent race will hinge not just on quantity, but on the global utility, ethical governance, and commercialization of AI technologies. Strategic foresight suggests a future where China leads in volume, but global influence will depend on who builds the most trusted and scalable AI solutions across borders.
