A recent study in Nature Communications has provided an in-depth comparison of 12 machine learning models for predicting synthetic lethality (SL) interactions, which are key in developing targeted cancer therapies.with at least these three key aspects.
SL occurs when mutations in two genes together cause cell death, but a mutation in just one gene does not.
The study found that improving data quality, like filtering noisy SL predictions, significantly enhances model accuracy.
The SLMGAE model performed the best, but challenges remain, especially in generalizing predictions to new, unseen gene pairs- crucial for real-world cancer applications.
How can AI refine cancer treatments further?
