The race is on!

This graphic breaks down the results of TOP500's latest supercomputer ranking (published November 2024).

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ America Leads

This ranking highlights America's position as the leader in global compute power:

β€’ Five out of the top πŸ”Ÿ supercomputers are in the UnitedStates

β€’ All 3️⃣ of the world's exascale computers are in the U.S.

It's worth nothing that πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ China is believed to have built two exascale supercomputers, but the country is withholding information about them for geopolitical reasons.

What's an exascale?

An exascale computer is capable of performing at least 1 exaflop (1 quintillion operations per second).

These systems can handle massive datasets and solve problems at unprecedented speed. Usecases include:

β€’ Simulating molecular interactions

β€’ Predicting climatechanges

β€’ Advancing nuclear research

Note: Each computer's performance in the TOP500 ranking is measured in petaflops (1 quadrillion). Thus, 1,000 petaflops is equal to 1 exaflop.
