Is a PHD degree relevant today?

(i) Doing a PhD or graduate studies trains you to invent new things.

(ii) A PhD / Masters helps ensure that your methodology leads to the path of innovation.

(iii) Even if you want to be an entrepreneur, you should still do a PhD or a Masters (by Research).

(iv) In a PhD / Masters, you get a sense of the state of the art and what is currently feasible/doable, especially in a deeply complex and technical area like AI.

(v) Gives greater legitimacy in (a) hiring good talent and (b) talking to investors.

His perspective offers a structured approach to increasing the likelihood of success in the field of AI.

I agree with Yann LeCun.

AI's knowledge domain is growing in size and complexity, and its application domains are also vast and non-trivial. Getting AI to work well in the real world is a non-trivial task, needing the kind of research training advocated by a leading figure in AI.
